Fourth Season Trivia

"AKA Superman"

Although Jeff Vlamig is credited with writing AKA Superman, Tim Minear is the actual author of the episode. Minear said the only thing left of the script that Vlamig wrote is the title. Tim also said that he worked into the wee hours of the morning doing the rewrite and the whole process took about 24 hours.

Tim Minear became a writer for Lois & Clark by sending out a spec X-Files script. It goes without saying that he also sent it to X-Files creator Chris Carter (Tim eventually wrote two episodes for X-Files), but Eugenie Ross-Leming, Co-Executive Producer of Lois & Clark, snapped him up first. Tim said he was plotting out fifth season's premiere episode when he found out the show had suddenly been canceled.

He told a group of fans on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) that the plot involved the mysterious baby seen in the fourth season finale and that he (yes, it was a boy) would suddenly start aging rapidly.  The fans didn't warm up to the notion, but Tim got to use the rapid aging baby concept on the series "Angel."

Okay, to be completely honest, there is one moment in the episode that Tim Minear did not write. Why? Because it was cooked up by Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher. They felt there should be a comical moment between Lois and Clark under the table involving the chopsticks that Lois repeatedly tossed on the floor. Why let a prop go to waste?

The change merely required a pause from Dean and a physical response fromTeri during this line of dialog: "Don't you think you're just overreacting because this woman (Clark pauses and gawks a moment at Penny's legs)  kissed me last night?" In response, Lois smacked Clark on the head with the infamous chopsticks.

Another adlib, or perhaps unintentional overlapping dialog, took place during the kissing scene in the kitchen where Lois was trying to convince Clark about the worthiness of the Ladies Overseas Aid charity. However, Clark was much more interested in lavishing smooches on Lois's neck. When she told him that Superman would "feel all the good" of helping others, he laughed and spoke the overlapping line, "Mm, Superman feels really good right now." Teri took it in stride and replied, "I know he does."

Speaking of the Ladies Overseas Aid ...

About 40 years before this episode of Lois & Clark, there was an episode of I Love Lucy titled "Ricky's European Booking." The plot was pretty simple. Lucy needed money to go to Europe and so invented a phony charity. What did she name it? You guessed it -- Ladies Overseas Aid. Either Tim Minear is a Lucy fan, or the name he selected for Lois's phony charity was an incredible million to one coincidence. I'm pretty sure it's the former.

"Metropolis Mailbag" was the title of the letters column of the Superman comics for years. Fans would write in commenting on the featured issue, or asking questions about the plot, characters, gizmos, etc., and the editor would reply. Today, unfortunatley, such good natured fun seems to be considered gauche and is harder to find.

However, back when Superman comics were still allowed a modicum of sentiment, one of the more touching elements appeared in "Superman #64" where he gathering mail from the Metropolis post office during the Christmas holiday. He replied to the tons of letters and sometimes personally helped those who needed more than an autograph to get through the season. It was a pleasant surprise to see this facet of the comic book mythology show up on the series.

Melissa Joan Hart (left-hand picture), Star of "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch," was originally set to play Penny Barnes in AKA Superman, but she had a very narrow window of time allotted for the role. So, when Dean Cain came down with the flu, production was shut down for a week and Hart had to back out of the deal.

Fortunately, Kristanna Loken, Justin Whalin's (Jimmy Olsen) real life girlfriend, had some features in common with Hart and was available to step in without much preparation and more importantly, she had a natural chemistry with Whalin.
