aren’t doing anything in response to the gang activity in his area,
batting away an insect as she speaks
12- in response to Clark telling her she’s got her “I have a plan

standard

in Mayson is affecting their job

PERRY-ISMS
1- Perry’s Love Analogy #1: “Love is tricky. You gotta think of it
as a jungle river. Exotic, treacherous, beautiful but uncharted. Reach
up and grab a mango from a tree and you’re just as likely to get
your arm ripped off by a jaguar!”
2- Perry’s Love Analogy #2: “I neglected to tell you that love is
most like a big casino. Flashing lights. Free drinks. Wayne Newton.
Plenty to distract a player from what’s really going on. But
sometimes when you throw them big dice in casino love. . .well, you
crap out.”
NOT -SO SUPERMAN
Unable to fight crime on the Southside because he can’t give
Intergang reason to kill someone to whom he is close, Superman takes
on the disguise of a police officer and breaks up the Skins gang, and
prevents the murder of Mike Lane, with the use of only boxing and fist
fighting skills.

his own joke, yet, when he turns away, he clearly doesn’t have one.
5- the smile Bill Church gives after killing Martin Snell and all of
the dirty cops is an indication that he is as insane as Lex Luthor
was.
6- Like Lex, he ran his empire hands on at all times, and almost like
Lex, his downfall was nearly brought about by the delegation of tasks
to other people. Church saved himself by getting rid of all his loose
ends. Lex didn’t, because he was distracted by his wedding.
7- Superman goes to talk to Lois, to tell her she has been targeted by
Intergang. The paint bullets fired at her and Jimmy were a warning to
him, Superman, that if he continues to interfere with the
organization’s plans on the Southside, the next bullets will be
real, and one of them will die. He has been warned that they don’t
want to see him anywhere on the Southside.
She muses that he is a pretty visible sight, and it isn’t as if he
can go undercover- SNAP! HISS! A light saber – that is, a light bulb
clicks on over Superman’s head. His expression brightens, he thanks
her and leaves.
8- Intergang’s silent partners have bought up 27 city blocks of real
estate with five areas in purchase negotiations, according the Snell.
One lone hold out, Mike Lane and his business establishment stands in
their way.
9- Mason tells Clark she appreciates his willingness to be a witness.
In her line of work, she doesn’t see very much bravery. He says he
just telling the truth and there is nothing brave about that. She
tells him he’s not flying around with a big re S on his chest
bragging about what a big hero he is. Clark asks if she’s really
heard Superman brag. Not in so many words- she knows they are friends
and Superman has done a lot of good things, but Clark is ten times the
man he is, because he’s an ordinary guy getting ready to stand up to
a big criminal organization. She’d like to see Superman do that
without his cape on. Clark tells her maybe she will.
10- the arrival of the third person: “ Mayson like me but she hates
Superman, which is confusing because Lois loves Superman but only
likes Clark. Mayson likes Clark but in a different way than Lois does.
And Mayson hates Superman in a different way than anybody!”
11- When Clark apologizes for losing his temper with her, Lois brushes
it off. They both lost their temper. He’s entitled. She’s been
known to get angry once every, what? “Three or four minutes,” he
mutters.
Good moment between them. He can’t resist teasing her every chance
he gets.
13- The judge has the second best line in the story. When Snell
dismisses Mayson’s taped conversation between them as fake, with an
impersonator doing his voice, the judge replies, “Really? I’d love
to hear his Brando.”
14- The best line is Jonathan’s, after Martha’s Freud and Jung
analysis: “Adult education.” (Pause) “It’s a beautiful
thing.” The sarcasm is just right and a funny play on that old TV
commercial.
Poor guy! He’s had many discussions over dinner with her about her
psych class.
OBSERVATIONS IN REAL LIFE
- There is a funny moment when the judge reveals Baby Rage’s real
name and remands him over for trial, and he grimaces and looks down,
and one wonders if he’s reacting to discovering he isn’t being
released after all, or to the revelation of his real name.
- I know next to nothing about guns so my descriptions of the weapons
used may be way off. The pill box gun, for example- a gun or a small
cannon?
- Peter Boyle’s performance as Bill Church is every bit as evil as
John Shea’s as Lex Luthor, but unlike Lex, Bill doesn’t try to
justify his criminal actions to himself. The smile on his face after
he kills Snell shows his insanity is just as much a part of his
personality as Lex’s madness was.
- This Superman has a lot of skills the movie and comic incarnations
don’t have. For one thing, he developed his powers gradually, not
all at once, and as a result he can do things the others can’t. He
can fight with the gang members without hurting them, for one thing,
and appear to be nothing more than a police officer who happened on
the scene of their attack on Mike Lane.
- when Clark and Lois are declining the chocolate torte in the first
scene, the salt and pepper shakers keep changing place and after all
these years I still haven’t figured out what animal is on Clark’s
tie, or if it is a reptile or an insect.
- Totally enjoyed how Farrah Forke played the scene when Mayson goes
to Clark’s apartment and he opens the door shirtless and wearing
khaki shorts. The way she says her lines, as if having to pluck words
out of a totally blank mind one by one and hope they relate to one
another in some way, is complemented by her facial expressions and the
shirt nonsense that follows. Great scene. And Clark’s fascination is
well done, too. Unlike indifferent Lois and over the top Cat, Mayson
is interested but unsure of herself. She was attracted on first
meeting, but falling in love here. Lois falls in love gradually, over
time, and we don’t see the moment, so it’s fun to see Forke’s
performance as Mayson actually does. She nailed it.
- I’ve listed the original song recordings used in the episodes as
they are on the DVDs. No one seems to know the name of the song that
replaces “Fly Me To The Moon” in recent re-broadcasts of the show.
