HISTORY, HOBBIES, ALL CHARACTERS
CLARK KENT/SUPERMAN- awakened at night by a bright light, notes the time and gets up and goes to the source of the light
- gets a key and opens a small chest on a bookshelf and opens it to see the small globe he found in the warehouse of Bureau 39 glowing brightly
- watches as the continental configurations on it change from Earth to Krypton and both fade away
- touches it and it glows even brighter, then he backs away hurriedly as images begin to form in the air between him and the globe
- listens as a man dressed in white appears and begins to speak
- learns his name is Kal- El and the man is his father, Jor-El and that the globe is attuned to him and it has activated because he has reached maturity
- watches the images played out before him and when they stop he reverently picks up the darkened globe and stares at it while repeating the name “Kal-El”
- immediately flies home to Kansas to tell his parents what happened
- doesn’t know why the globe is suddenly communicating, but since it was attuned to him perhaps they were separated too long and it needed to “warm up”
- has always wondered why he was “left on your doorstep” and hopes the globe will answer all of his questions and he is excited as well as a little apprehensive to find out
- enters the newsroom, offers a good morning and is caught up watching the bet between Jimmy and Cat unfold
- answers the phone, as Perry and Lois talk about the latest article he and Lois are working on, and listens in stunned silence to the caller
- announces his apartment has been robbed – he has to go
- the apartment in total disarray, he picks through his belongings
- after a short visit by Inspector Henderson whose grim advice is noted, finds the chest on the littered floor and it is empty
- tells Lois personal items are missing- trophies, keepsakes, irreplaceable stuff
- doesn’t mention the globe but is shaken by its loss
- lets Lois talk him into going to see someone she thinks can help
- clearly not wanting to be at the pool hall she takes him to, he tries repeatedly to leave but…
- asks how she knows this Louie as he takes the cue ball in her hand and puts it back on the table and makes a good shot
- tells Louie the police have all his information and thinks he should just let them work his case
- reconsiders at Lois’s insistence, asking what Louie expects in return
- assists Lois on her article but he couldn’t care less as he aches from lack of sleep
- after a brief show of sympathy from Lois, he sarcastically thanks her for being so concerned, and she replies, “You’re welcome” automatically.
- after she calls his possessions junk he tells her he will take her advice and put it all behind him, so she can drop it
- appreciates her help but it is all his problem- what about Louie? she demands- “He won’t come up with anything!” But Louie comes through! Clark and Lois go back to the pool hall
- “Are you sure that’s him?” Clark asks as he looks a young boy tied to a chair by the pool tables
- can’t deny the pile of things on another pool table belong to him, though he doesn’t tell anyone the globe is missing
- as Lois questions the boy, Clark reminds her they are not the law and he’s just a kid
- doesn’t want to go to the police, just wants answers about some of the items that are missing
- chases after the boy when he runs and catches him easily and so does not know Lois finds more of Jack’s pictures of the globe among his belongings
- tells him he’ll let him go if he is straight with him
- is disappointed to learn the globe was sold and the boy doesn’t know who bought it or where it might be now
- he believes the boy and lets him go until he asks about the hologram figure of the man with Superman’s ‘S’
- surprised, he grabs Jack again, but backs off when the boy squirms in pain and looks up at him in surprise
- learns that the globe activated when the boy touched it and the hologram said “something like this is the second time I’ll appear…something like that”
- lets Jack go but asks where he’s going
- promises he won’t follow him and gives him his card, telling him to call if he wants to talk
- takes off his suit jacket and gives it to Jack- “It’s freezing. Take it.”
- watches him run away because he has no reason to detain him
- tells his parents he has never felt so exposed, and if he is then they and anyone close to him is exposed to
- feels even Lois is a problem as he is unsure what she will do if she puts him and the globe together
- is spending every free moment searching but Metropolis is a big city and the globe might not be in the city anymore
- before hanging up the phone, promises to keep his parents posted- all three are visibly worried
- later, he is suddenly aware that the globe has been activated and though he is nowhere near it, he sees its message as clearly as if he was holding it
- calls his parents as soon as the second message ends- someone is using the globe but he saw the message, too, and feels they are closing in on him
- the next day he is puzzled by an angry Lois pushing him about the robbery for no reason he can fathom and leaves her as her rant dies down
- goes looking for Jack and finds him and his brother in the pitiful nest they have made for themselves in an abandoned building
- tells him Louie told him Jack was here- “He knows guys who know guys.”
- meets Denny, who was hiding, and who is wearing the suit jacket he gave to Jack
- asks Jack about the men who bought the globe, the truth about what they looked like
- tries to help the boys, but Jack is adamant they have tried it all and they are better off together living like this
- finally admits defeat and leaves reluctantly
- he’s at his desk in the newsroom when the third message from the globe plays
- afterward he sinks into his chair, reeling from the information revealed
- when Lois comes and begins to argue with him about the globe, he becomes very defensive, believing she is defending Superman as well as herself
- though she orders him not to answer his telephone when it rings, he does anyway
- the call is from a frightened boy who identifies himself as Denny, Jack’s brother
- sends the boy to the 12th Precinct Police Station and tells him to ask for Inspector Henderson and “tell him I sent you”
- tells him not to worry about Jack and promises to find him
- asks Lois, twice, to please go the 12th Precinct and look after Denny
- though she hotly refuses, he asks her as a partner and friend to do it for him and they will talk later
- leaves promising to check in with her at the police station
- airborne at the time of the last globe transmission, he stops in midair to give his full attention to it, and this time he is able to locate the area of the transmission and homes in on it
- reaches the treasure vault seconds after Lex and Nigel leave and is distracted from following them by the failsafe device counting down
- reclaims the globe and listens to the final moments of the last story
- rescues Jack and his brother and returns them to the care of the state but this time makes certain both are well taken care of
LOIS LANE- sits at her desk playing with a pencil as Jimmy comes and talks about an article he is reading about possible blood relations between Metropolitans and listens as he tells Cat they could be related and they make a bet on the outcome
- tilts Jimmy’s head and looks at Cat Grant, and teasingly says she sees a family resemblance
- taking charge of the bet, demands detailed family histories, including charts, and blood tests on her desk no later than the following afternoon- and she’s not kidding about the blood tests
- tells Perry her story on rising crime rates is lacking an angle
- hearing Clark’s apartment has been robbed, she at first sympathizes, then suddenly has an idea, telling him she’ll go with him and looks up into the air, mouthing, “Thank you!”
- at the ransacked apartment, tells Clark not to touch anything, he’ll taint the evidence, it’s a crime scene
- is on a roll with Clark’s misfortune: the story of violation ,of having a stranger pawing through your personal belongings, forget the monetary loss, it’s stealing parts of a person’s past, leaving a sense of invulnerability, of invasion, urban angst…..
- sees his expression and stops and apologizes, patting him on the back and assuring him if the police can’t get his stuff back, she knows someone who can
- takes him to a smoky pool hall where she loudly announces she is looking for Louie but the lone pool player ignores her
- takes the cue ball away from him and tells him to tell Louie Lois Lane is here
- loftily tells Clark it’s her business as a reporter to know who knows what’s going on in the city- and…his daughter was her tennis doubles partner in college
- when Clark is hesitant about taking help from Louie, she tells him this is great stuff, do it for her story!
- shrugs slightly and says, “Tell me about it.” when Louie calls Clark a straight arrow
- returning to the newsroom to work on her story, she at first sympathizes with a tired Clark and gives him a shoulder rub before telling him to snap out of it and put it behind him!
- asks for his inventory list for the article and asks why he is stalling when he won’t let her see it and asks why she’s so curious
- tells him she’s not- she has no interest in his bottle caps or love letters from Lula May or his Smallville soap box derby ribbon- she’s trying to help him
- the list will show how people get unreasonably, sentimentally attached to their old junk
- after Louie calls her and Clark back to his pool hall, she at first questions Jack, then notices and is appalled that he is secured to his chair
- frees the boy and looks on helplessly as he immediately runs away
- starts looking through the items on the table, including two Polaroid photo, and is stunned by what she sees
- they are of Jor-El and the globe and she mutters Clark may be holding out on her
- sharply questions him the next day, trying to get him to admit to having the globe
- when he seems puzzled by her questions, she angrily points out that if anything is still missing, they should keep looking
- frustrated by his refusal to admit the globe is missing, she rants on about any useless, valueless keepsake he might want back
- tells Perry that Clark has lied to her and so she can’t ever trust him anymore
- admits to Perry that she lies to Clark all the time but also admits she never told him she knew he had lied to her
- approaches Clark at his desk and tells him they are going to talk and she wants the truth
- asks about the globe and the images it projects and waves the pictures she found among his stolen belongings
- says he is a weird guy but she thought he was also her partner and friend and she wants an explanation of the pictures NOW!
- is shocked to learn he found the globe at the Bureau 39 warehouse- “MY Bureau 39?” she says indignantly.
- says he took and kept something belonging to Superman that she herself would kill to know about? 
- when he says they weren’t partners then, she corrects him that they might never be now and goes off on a rant about him lying to her
- when he reminds her she often lies to him, she rationalizes that she can because he is from Smallville and she is from Metropolis and they have completely different standards!
- it’s not about Superman- it’s about “us” and how can she ever trust him again?
- when his phone rings, she orders him not to answer it but of course, he does despite her telling him, “Don’t leave, I’m not finished with you yet!” and giving him the most furious if-looks-could-kill glare ever put on film!
- later, tells him she would have been happy to share the treasure vault story with him but is pleased when he dismisses that saying he owed her
- agrees, calling him partner because she decided to forgive him
- after thinking it over she realized had she been the one to find the globe- she would have done the same thing, so they aren’t that different after all, and if Jimmy’s right, they might even be related
- wistfully wishes she knew what the globe really was and is pleased to know Superman was glad to get it and he put it in a safe place
PERRY WHITE- steps into the newsroom to make an announcement but no one hears or listens to what he has to say

- joins Lois, Clark and Jimmy in the lunch area and tells Lois her article on Clark’s robbery is terrific
- silently witnesses Lois go on a rant about something to which Clark is clueless
- asks Lois if she is all right and when she says No, surprises her by not telling her an Elvis story relating to her problems with Clark
- asks her if she has ever lied to Clark about anything and is surprised by her answer
- advises her to ask him about it
- is pleased with Lois’s story but disappointed it didn’t boost her chances for the Meriweather- but there is always next year
- in the meantime, he sees follow-up stories, lots of them, about the origin of the treasures
- has his first run in with the new copy boy
JIMMY OLSEN- approaches Cat and Lois with a copy of Metropolis Science Magazine, sits down in a chair next to Lois’s desk and makes a derisive sound
- asked what’s wrong, tells her an article says there is a statistical probability of over 90% that any two people living in Metropolis are blood related as long as their families have lived in the city for at least three generations
- makes a bet with Cat that the two of them turn out to be related by blood and suggests a night of passion involving the two of them if he is right and him repainting her condo completely if she is right
- tells Clark he “is the man!” for his nomination and lamely tells a furious Lois she is, uh, the woman (“More or less,” Cat mumbles.) and he quickly leaves the area
- looks over his family tree with Cat, pointing out people of interest (Uncle Howard and Aunt Millie)
- eventually proves he and Cat are related
- thinking Clark got his things back, the whole robbery was “no harm, no foul”
- after Perry joins the trio, he suddenly realizes Perry and Lois are giving him a look and he quickly gets up and leaves, stating “Nature’s calling.”
- later, is delighted to have been replaced on the gopher list by new employee, Jack the young petty thief
- is disappointed by Cat’s cancellation of the bet after asking her when is their ‘big night’
- though they turned out to be related, tries to tell her anything they did wouldn’t be doing anything illegal- to no affect
CAT GRANT- sits at her desk reading a book and filing her nails

- she, for one, would like to know

- says she always thought he was cute and who knows what might have happened before
- they are related by blood and she can’t go through with it- they’re family

JONATHAN KENT- asks for more information about the globe and learns it was in the ship that brought Clark to Earth

- takes the globe from a wooden chest the other man is holding and places it on a pedestal
- Is impressed by the way the light affects it, and calls it a perfect jewel
- orders Nigel to have it examined atom by atom
- declares they are on the verge of an historic moment, and leads Nigel on a short tour of his treasure trove: objects unknown and unseen by the world, existing only for his own pleasure
- tells Nigel the globe will change everything – Superman is a mystery and he lacks the weapon needed to bend him to his will, but that is about to change

- in his frustration at losing the globe he turns back and must be pulled out of the room seconds before Superman burst into the vault from another entrance
- reads the newspaper headlines after his treasures are discovered as he and Nigel walk along a city street
- give and take, he muses, win some, lose some, one step back and two steps forward
- tells Nigel they know a great fact: the last son of Krypton arrived on Earth as an infant and raised as a common Earthling
- “He walks among us. And when I discover his identity- and I will- he and all the people who share his secret will be at my mercy.”
JACK- a boy about sixteen, carries a large cloth bag through a few alleys, pausing frequently to look back and make sure he isn’t being followed

- goes inside and makes his way to an old office where two unmade cots stand side by side
- puts the bag on the one nearest the door and goes to the other where another boy is asleep and turns back
- dumps the contents of his bag on the empty cot- small personal items, CDs, framed certificates, trophies, and a glowing globe with strange continental configurations on it

- fights back futilely and stops when assured he won’t be hurt
- admits he sold the globe, he had to, to some guys who saw the pictures he took and passed around- older guys, kind of strange

The full figure painting of Mona Lisa- When the globe is in Luthor’s possession he and Nigel watch the holograms, but even though he is at a distance from it, Clark seems to get a lot more out of the experience than they do, first of all touching his head as if he is having a headache. The information given to him appears to be much more than just the visual display. Perhaps it is like the knowledge given to Lois by Dr. Faraday in TEHI, but for Clark the ‘activation,’ that she is never given, is present.
-Luthor is impressed by the marketing potential of the globe- deems it much better than cable TV, good production values, excellent sound and visual clarity…every home in America should have one.
- Another facet of Lex Luthor’s sociopathic personality is revealed by his apparent plans to make Jack tell him the truth about the globe, and then make him disappear afterward. A sixteen year old youth. I wonder what would have happened to the Smart Kids after he was finished with them?
- Though Jack and Denny do not give a last name in the episode, several fanfiction stories use the name “Miner” to identify them, and at least one online source of cast information lists Miner as Jack’s last name, too. I assume this is a fanon creation but I don’t know if it comes from an official source or not: that is, someone associated with the series who might have overheard the name sometime during production of the episodes in which Jack appeared.
- When speaking with his parents, Clark wonders if the reason it took so long for the globe to communicate with him was because they had been separated for too long. It seems to be the case because though attuned to him- as an infant- it has difficulty sensing him as an adult. It responds to touch, anyone’s touch, until the end when he is nearing it once again and it shuts off after seeming to realize Lex was not Kal-El at all, but that Kal-El is coming closer to it. It corrects its mistake by levitating out of Luthor’s reach and staying out of reach.
- Resting safely in the tree house on the Kent farm, the globe begins to glow as Jonathan and Martha carry the ladder away from the tree. We have seen that it can communicate with Clark over distances. Was it sending him a message or just getting to know its surroundings now that it has rejoined him at their destination?
Jor-El’s five visits:1- My name is Jor-El. And you are Kal-El, my son. The object you now possess has been attuned to you. That you now hear these words is proof that you survived the journey in space and have reached your full maturity. Now it is time for you to learn your heritage. To that end, I will appear to you five times. Watch for the light, listen, and learn.
Time grows short and we continue to search. The immensity of space is both a blessing and a curse. In that near infinite variety there must be _some_ place suitable. Hope and desperation drive us in equal measure. Lara works by my side. She is tireless and endlessly patient. Considering what is soon to come, this is my greatest consolation: that we are together.
2- This is the second of the five times I will appear. You may wonder that I speak your language, and not my native Kryptonian: I don't. That is another property of the object.
Unmanned Kryptonian probes have explored every corner of the known galaxy and beyond. For thousands of centuries we have received data back from those probes. I have every confidence that, given enough time, we can achieve the conversion to a manned vessel. But, will we have the time?
There is an ancient Kryptonian saying: 'On a long road, take small steps.' Precision and care are the watchwords. Yet, we still have far to go.
3- There is no longer any doubt. The chain reaction has begun. As panic spreads, the population awakens, too late, to its fate. Our future is inevitable.
At last the computers have located a suitable destination: a planet physically and biologically compatible with Krypton whose inhabitants resemble ours, and whose society in based on ethical standards which we, too, embrace in concept, if not always in deed. The inhabitants call it, simply, Earth.
4- We have installed the hyperlight drive and tested it as best we can. So much is unknown.
Contained within the sphere is the navigational computer that will guide the ship through the maze of hyperspace, as well as this account of our final days.
5- I try to picture where you are now and you hear this last chapter. What do you look like? Are you alone? What have you become? Lara and I will never know. But that you should live to experience this... that is enough. We are content. We give you to Earth, to a realm called America, and a place called Kansas. Remember us, but do not regret our passing. All is fate.
Story Time with Lane and HendersonLois-
It's late at night. Some sweet, innocent little old lady, probably someone's grandmother, is getting ready for bed. Suddenly, burglars burst in, knock her down, and steal her life savings out from underneath her mattress and you wanna know why? Because some cop like you was too lazy to dust for prints and the burglars were never caught.
Bill-
That same sweet, little old, innocent grandmother is preparing for bed one night and she hears burglars breaking into her house. So she rushes to the phone and she dials 911, but, by the time help gets there, it’s too late. Wanna know why? Because all the good cops are out someplace else dusting for prints .
OBSERVATIONS IN REAL LIFEI know the series was shot on a back lot and special effects or whatever were used to create the enormity of the urban areas, but I like the way the set decorators made Metropolis, a huge city filled with tall buildings when viewed from the air, a plant filled green city on street level. For all the skyscrapers and multi-storey buildings, the streets were made to appear full of plants of all sizes, trees, and even rooftop greenery from some aerial shots.
The scene of Lex and Nigel walking down a busy city street with trees and shady areas nearby makes Metropolis look like a city where the citizens try hard to soften the presence of concrete and paved streets.
It’s like you can find a place anywhere along a busy street to sit down in the shade and rest a few minutes.
For all the crime and strange goings on, it’s a place where people like to live.
